THANK YOU, "READING MOTHERS"... (and a giveaway winner too!)

With very scientific and accurate deduction, my son Jonny helped me randomly choose the winner of my "1st Blog-iversary Giveaway", and the winner is...Jane Meyer!  Please visit her lovely website: www.janemeyer.com

Happy Mother's Day to all my readers!

THE READING MOTHER
by Strickland Gillilan (1869-1954)

I had a mother who read to me
   Sagas of pirates who scoured the sea.
   Cutlasses clenched in their yellow teeth;
   "Blackbirds" stowed in the hold beneath.
 I had a Mother who read me lays
   Of ancient and gallant and golden days;
   Stories of Marmion and Ivanhoe,
   Which every boy has a right to know.
I had a Mother who read me tales
   Of Gelert the hound of the hills of Wales,
   True to his trust till his tragic death,
   Faithfulness lent with his final breath.
I had a Mother who read me the things
   That wholesome life to the boy heart brings-
   Stories that stir with an upward touch.
   Oh, that each mother of boys were such!
You may have tangible wealth untold;
   Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
   Richer than I you can never be --
   I had a Mother who read to me.

  2. And happy anniversary to you! This is a wonderful blog. Hope it's okay that I read it all the time and I can't count myself as young in anything *but* soul. :-)

  4. You were a great "Reading Mother" to your children, and your husband. You encouraged character with the many books you read to us.

    Though I think the kids always liked my voice better for "Croie! Croie!" in The Children's Book of Virtues.
